Saying Goodbye to Cattle: A Tough but Promising Transition for the Farm

For us, cows have not just been part of our business - they have been a part of our family and our farm life.  However, sometimes life leads us down a path where difficult decisions have to be made, like selling our cows.  This transition, while challenging, has started to open up new opportunities and allow us to be able to reevaluate how our time and resources will be spent on the farm.

The decision to sell our cows has not been made lightly.  There is an emotional impact that comes with parting ways with our animals that have been an integral part of our daily farm operation and our family life for twenty years. Yes, there is apprehension - finding the right buyers, ensuring the animals are well-cared for, and also the financial implication of the sale.

The driving force behind our decision, the reallocation of resources and time.  It is time to embark on a new journey but we can't that to the best of our ability unless we free up time and resources. Cattle require a substantial amount of attention, money, and land. The feeding, vet care, and pasture management, just to name a few day to day activities.  By selling the cows, our farm may now look to the opportunity of selling our farm products direct to consumers.

We have started the journey of improving our soil health and attracting a new consumer market that is interested in local, sustainably grown wheat and by fall stone milled flour. This creates for us a new revenue stream but also helps build a community that wants to know more about where their food comes from and what is in their food.

This is a poignant chapter in Chisholm Trail Farm's life but it is a move that will bring growth and new opportunities.  While the path may be lined with emotional and practical challenges, the potential to create a more flexible and potentially more sustainable lifestyle will make the decision worth it. We are excited but nervous to be able to provide to consumers a more trusted source for food.
