Planting Season 2024: A Fresh Start on the Farm

Spring heralds a period of renewal and hope, and nowhere is this more evident than on the farm.  The winter frost has melted away and green shoots are beginning to appear, farmers start rolling up their sleeves for this important season.  This time of year is critical for setting the tone for the months to come, involving careful planning, preparation, and a lot of hard work.  Let's delve into what planting season entails and why it's so crucial for the success of our farm.

Planting season starts long before the seeds hit the soil.  Throughout winter there is the selection of seeds, arranging supplies, working on equipment, and meticulously planning our crop rotations to manage our soil health and optimize yields. This year with market prices down, we decided to try doing things different.  We have less corn, no soybeans, and have added peas and more buckwheat.

Mike and Alex next review our soil tests from the fall to see where we are at with our need for fertilizer or if any changes have to be made. Once the ground has been prepped, let the planting begin!  This May has brought rain, which was needed, but has slowed planting season down.  We had even had a bit of optimism about being done ahead of schedule this year, and we still may be but we will have to work through this season and see.

Planting season is a season filled with optimism.  Each seed planted is a bet on the future, a step toward a bountiful harvest.  It's a time when Mike and Alex not only put their skills and knowledge to the test but also their hopes and dreams for the year. As consumers, each sprout in the field and each emerging leaf is a remind of the dedication and hard work that goes into the food we eventually enjoy.  As we look forward to the growing season, we need to appreciate the intricate dance of planning, preparation, and hard work that spring planting entails - a true labor of love and hope.
