It's harvest time at Chisholm Trail Farm.
The combines are rolling, the grain bins are filling, and Mike and the crew are out in the fields bringing in wheat, rye, and oats—grains we've intentionally planted and tended to with care since the day they were planted.
August is a month of momentum. The pace quickens, the workdays stretch, and our focus is demanded. We would be lying if we told you this is a carefree time. Regardless of the stress and hard work, this time of year is also deeply rewarding. To us, harvest isn't just about collecting crops or reaping the fruits of our labor. It's about seeing the results of every choice we've made to steward our land, protect our soil, and grow food that feeds and nourishes people as they expect.
That's what we mean when we talk about our Harvest Promise.
In a food system built for speed and shelf life, we choose something slower, more intentional, where every step from the field to your table is done with integrity.
What Our Harvest Promise Means
Our Harvest Promise is simple:
-
We grow food in a way that respects the land
-
We mill it in a way that honors the grain
-
We deliver it the way it was meant to be shared—fresh, honest, and with nothing hiding in the folds
Our promise is a commitment that has guided our family's work for four generations, and we are only getting started!
It Starts With the Soil
Long before the combine fires up, the foundation is already laid. We follow regenerative farming practices because farming should give back more than it takes.
That means:
-
Planting cover crops that feed the soil in the off-season
-
Rotating crops like rye, oats, and wheat to protect long-term fertility
-
Reducing tillage to keep the soil structure healthy and carbon where it belongs
Crops like rye and einkorn thrive in this system. They're resilient, nutrient-dense, and gentle on the earth, an ideal match for our growing system.
Milled the Old Way, on Purpose
Once the grain is harvested, it goes to the dryer, and then small batches go to the stone mill. We don't rush the process, bleach our berries, or strip them down to meet some industrial standard. Our soil provides a nutrient-rich product, so there is no need to enrich our flour with mineral additives.
Stone milling allows us to keep the whole grain intact—bran, germ, and all the natural oils that make flour rich in flavor and nutrition.
The result? Flour that actually tastes like something. You can feel good and rest assured about using Chisholm Trail Farm's flour, whether baking sourdough or flipping pancakes on a slow weekend morning.
Packed By Hand, Sent With Care
After drying and milling, we package everything ourselves; no warehouses, no third-party storage, no sitting on a shelf for months.
Our products are cleaned through an MCIA-approved facility, packed in small batches, and shipped straight from our farm in northwestern Minnesota. That way, when you open a bag, it smells fresh, and you know exactly where it came from.
Why We're So Transparent
Most food labels don't tell you much, and trust is hard to come by in today's food system, especially with the amount of medical research linking our food with long-term chronic disease and illness.
We want to change that by showing up honestly, especially now, during harvest, when you can see the full arc of the work it takes to move wheat from the field to your table.
Our promise to you is simple and one that we will keep. It's an honor to be here, to farm well, to mill carefully, and to deliver food that feeds people.
Thanks for choosing food you can trace back to a field, a family, and a promise.
