There's a buzz of excitement here at Chisholm Trail Farm. Fall is one of our favorite seasons, and for good reason. It’s the time of year when all the hard work, dedication, and passion we pour into our fields throughout spring and summer come to fruition—harvest time has arrived.
There's something magical about the way the farm transforms in the fall. The fields, once lush and green, now glow in hues of amber and gold. The trees that line our property display a tapestry of reds, oranges, and yellows, creating a breathtaking backdrop for our daily work. The past couple of weeks have not felt like fall though with having summer temperatures and humidity but we can see the cooler temperatures arriving next week!
This past weekend rain was anticipated for Friday night into Saturday morning so the race was on to finish our emmer and red fife harvest! Low and behold Mother Nature collaborated with us for once this year. She has tried our patience on multiple occasions this season but we have to be grateful for her generosity with our harvest thus far.
This week we will be planting cover crops and cutting our buckwheat. This is our second year growing buckwheat and it is still a learning curve. They are calling for rain this next weekend but according to our sources, once cut, buckwheat is darn near indestructible. As long as it doesn't get hot after it rains, which it looks like it will be cooling down which is good.
This year's harvest means more than ever before, as we combine our grain and buckwheat we look forward to being able to package our crops and bring them directly to you in the near future! We are excited to be able to hit the next trail in our journey and officially get this party started!
